There has been lots of buzz on trending new dance moves in this past year. I think it’s time that my readers and I discuss a few of these moves… so what about dance crazes? How do they come about, and why do they fade away so quickly? In 2015 some new chart topping moves include the whip, the nae nae, the dab, and “piping it up.” Unless you have no form of social media or contact with the world, you have heard of a few of these. All of the moves, expect the dab which has its origins from Atlanta, came from songs. “Watch Me,” by Silento is notorious for it’s whip, nae nae, stanky leg, etc. lyrics referring to the corresponding dances. Piping it up came from the Migos song, “Pipe It Up.” Although, the dab, one of the more recent of dance fads, does not come from a song, it has become very popular through celebrities. Sports stars, for example Cam Newton, quarterback for our very own NFL North Carolina Panthers, “dabs” every time he runs a Panthers first down or touchdown. Also, Odell Beckham Jr. of the New York Giants NFL team used to whip when he scored a touchdown. Kids who watch the games and see their idols doing these hit celebratory dances find it incredibly cool, and have to learn how to do them like their idols right away. For some though, the whip has already lost its luster, along with other dances slowly slipping in popularity. Dance trends only last so long. Maybe you remember old songs accompanied with dances such as, the dougie, the cat daddy, the wobble, Gangnam Style, the jerk, the two step, the Harlem shake, the cupid shuffle, twerking or “Crank That” by Soulja Boy. The list is endless. Some for the old souls out there would be the the Electric Slide (1980s-90s) or all the way back to the Pretzel from Swing style (1920s) dancing. Any dance you look at from the lists were wildly popular for a few years at best and then fade away. Granted, the cupid shuffle, swing dancing, and the wobble often come up at line dances. However, usually these trends lose popularity quickly and dwindle to make room for the upcoming songs and fads because people become bored of the same dance moves that have become so recognized. While the dab and piping it up are at their peak right now, they will soon begin their decline and the next move will appear. Who knows what it will be? The only thing we do know for sure is that most of us will look pretty silly trying to keep up. Until next time on So What About, remember to get jiggy with it and have fun trying all these moves.
