Fight Song could rally tradition
A couple weeks ago, during Homecoming, I had a unique opportunity to lead an alumni tour around campus. The pride and love of these graduates, many who graduated decades ago, was astounding.
Their experience here impacted them and continued to have a lasting impact years and years later. When they originally roamed these halls, they left a legacy. What struck me the most was that these adults still had the most incredible respect for Roberson.
TC has been planted on the same land for 54 years. This ground is the definition of tradition. Even our school’s colors are filled with tradition. There is nothing as classic as “old gold” and navy blue. We are so lucky not to be a horrid mix of sallow yellow and dour green, if you know who I’m referencing.
Roberson is the largest school in Buncombe County. This makes us incredibly diverse and distinct. But, there is something missing. With such numbers and differences comes a degree of separation.
High school for many has just become four years. However if you take the time to talk to graduates from even 20 years ago, Roberson wasn’t just their high school, it’s their alma mater. Their honor. Their home.
These alumni inspired me, and I think a rebirth of tradition and honor can all begin with a simple song. The Fight Song is absolutely one of our finest traditions, and it is something that is easily revived.
It is on the walls of the gym, and many graduates could probably still remember the ballad. So why aren’t we learning it? Do you know the Fight Song? This song is our common ground in our diversity. A uniting shout. Literally.
Next Thursday, a commercial will be aired during the Reynolds-Roberson football game, bringing attention to our school. The song’s key lyrics, “For the Blue and Gold” is the thematic centerpiece of the commercial, and it can once again bring back the pride and honor where it belongs.
Here is the challenge, let’s learn the Fight Song. Let’s sing it at games, pep rallies, throughout the streets. Let’s fight for the gold and for the blue. Let’s bring pride back where it belongs.
Hail, T.C. Roberson
We will fight for the blue & gold
Raise a song on high for TCR
As we wave our banners bold
And we’ll sing “onward to victory!”
As we fight for the Rams proud and true
We will fight!
We will fight!
We will fight! forevermore
For the Gold & Blue!
